We named this app Bersiv — "answer" in Kurmanci — because every loanword in our language deserves a pure Kurdish answer.
Kurdish has been spoken in the mountains of Kurdistan for over 4,000 years. It outlasted empires, survived centuries of conquest, and endured decades of suppression. But today, in living rooms and schoolyards across the diaspora, it is quietly slipping away — not through force, but through forgetting.
Bersiv exists to change that.
A language at a crossroads
Kurdish was banned from public life in Turkey from 1980 to 1991. In Syria, it was excluded from schools for over 50 years under Baʿathist rule. Generations grew up Kurdish at heart but literate only in Arabic. In January 2026, in a historic shift, Syria officially recognized Kurdish as a national language for the first time.
In Europe, research shows that while second-generation Kurds feel a deep emotional connection to their language, their reading and writing skills are significantly weaker than their parents — and the gap is growing.
More than vocabulary. A cultural act.
Over generations of suppression and displacement, Arabic loanwords quietly replaced thousands of native Kurmanci terms. Words for emotions, for ideas, for everyday life — replaced so gradually that many speakers no longer know the difference.
Bersiv teaches the pure Kurdish alternatives — words preserved in old texts, in dialects, in the speech of elders. Every word pair is cross-referenced across 11 multilingual dictionaries and verified by native speakers. We don't guess.
This is not about purity for its own sake. It is about reconnecting Kurdish speakers — especially those who grew up in the diaspora — with a layer of their language that was quietly buried. Every word you reclaim is a small act of cultural restoration.
For every Kurdish heart, wherever you are
For the diaspora. If you grew up speaking a mix of Kurdish and Arabic, Bersiv helps you reconnect with the pure form of what you already carry.
For heritage learners. If Kurdish was the language of home but school was something else entirely, Bersiv meets you where you are and builds from there.
For curious learners. If you're drawn to Kurdish culture, history, or identity and want to engage with the language directly — Bersiv is the place to start.
You are not just learning words. You are keeping a language alive.
Every session in Bersiv is a small act of preservation. Every word you master is one your children might one day hear from you — in the language it was always meant to be spoken.
